A hiatal hernia is a protrusion of the stomach through the diaphragm may be caused by obesity, pregnancy, aging, previous surgery, or just a congenital weakness of the muscles where the esophagus goes through. It will not affect heart beat which is controlled by special pacing nodes in the heart. Some causes of heart palpitations include as following:anxiety, stress, fear, panic attacks, thyroid problems, heart diseases, certain medicines etc.

If you are having irregular heart beats (called arrhythmias) you need to contact your doctor for a workup to determine what is causing them.
